Community Events & Sponsorships

May/June 1996

  • In May, Comcast awarded two 27 inch TVs to Warren Township schools on behalf of the two winners of their 'Find Yourself In A Book' contest, held during this past semester.  Student book reports in the form of 30 second commercials were produced with the help of ETC and a video compilation of the students reports were shown on the Education Channel.

  • In May, Comcast was, once again, a proud sponsor of the Lawrence Township Foundation's Teacher Recognition Gala.

  • This past spring, Comcast promoted C-SPAN's national '1st Vote '96' scholarship competition that focused on young people who will participate in the electoral process for the first time this year.  High school seniors submitted essays on how the C-SPAN Network helped with their voting decision process.  We were very pleased to learn that a senior from Plainfield High School was selected as an Honorable Mention Winner.

  • On a related note, in May, Comcast and X103 FM brought the MTV 'Choose or Lose' national touring bus to campus of IUPUI to register voters in anticipation of this fall's election.  This was very successful and, as a result, we are bringing back the bus to register more voters on July 2nd for the Lollapalooza '96 concert tour to be held at the Deer Creek Music Center.

  • Other activities in May: Sponsorship of the Chamber of Commerce Local Government Reception on May 21st; Airing of Crossroads Rehabilitation Center's 'Overcoming Barriers to Employment' as an LO feature for the month; Committed our sponsorship support, once again, to the American Diabetes Association WALKTOBERFEST to raise money for diabetes research.  Last October this event attracted over 1200 walkers who raised $85,000.

  • Our cable theft campaign promoted through 30 second commercial spots that rewards customers with a  month of free service for the name or address of anyone known to be stealing cable service has been extremely effective.  We have even been given identities of several individuals that were offering illegal cable hook-ups that we will be prosecuting when caught.  In addition, once anyone contemplating cable theft sees the new dark comedy The Cable Guy, starring Jim Carey, I am sure these individuals will think twice about receiving cable from anyone other than a legitimate cable company.  Did I mention that Comcast was a national and local sponsor of the movie premier and a special behind-the-scenes program to raise money for Comic Relief?

  • You may have seen local coverage or the national Diane Sawyer interview with Indy's Keith and Becki Dilley - parents of sextuplets.  In the Diane Sawyer interview, Keith and Becki mentioned how expensive it is to raise sextuplets and how they had to do without many extras, including cable TV.  Having heard this, we were happy to provide five outlets of free cable TV with THE DISNEY CHANNEL to the Dilleys - just in time for Father's Day.  In addition, since the sextuplets just turned three years old last weekend, we gave each child a Mickey Mouse or Minnie Mouse stuffed toy.

  • This past Friday, Comcast brought the CARTOON NETWORK 'Toons Truck' to town so that the Children's Bureau could bring a little joy to disadvantaged or mistreated kids at two service locations.  Kids got to enjoy some of their favorite cartoons, beat the heat with free snow cones, and take home a souvenir frisbee.

  • In that Indianapolis has been notified by the EPA to reduce the threat of large levels of ozone that could cause respiratory ailments, Comcast will be running heavy flights of PSAs featuring all local broadcast weather anchors as they educate people in our community of the ozone risk and ways to reduce the cause of ozone build-up.

  • In June, we discontinued local production of our monthly cable guide in favor of a national product that can be locally customized.  The benefits of our new guide far outweigh our former product.  As we expanded our cable services, we needed to expand our guide while, at the same time, avoid a rate increase in the cost of the guide to our customers.  In addition, since this new guide is delivered via second class mail, we have greater control over making sure the guide is delivered on time, which was a problem in the past with our third class mailing.  Customer comments have been very favorable as this new  guide covers all of our new programming at no additional cost to subscribe.  A copy has been provided for each board member to review.

  • Five new services are being launched today to all areas that have yet to be completely upgraded and Pay-Per-View movies begin in one week to these areas.  At the conclusion of our three week SNEAK PEEK preview for customers to sample popular programming from our upgraded areas, we conducted independent random research to help us select four channels currently provided in upgraded areas.  The four channels we are launching are currently provided in upgraded areas.  The four channels we are launching are ESPN2, SPEEDVISION, THE HISTORY CHANNEL, and COMEDY CENTRAL.  A fifth channel we will be providing fulltime known as the Comcast SNEAK PEEK CHANNEL will feature two week samples of other programming available in upgraded areas only.  However, initially, we will be providing a 'sneak peek' of programming from HOME & GARDEN TELEVISION.  At some point soon we will be providing a toll-free number for customers to call and with customer viewing preferences.
