Community Involvement Report

September 2001

Production:

  • Scheduled promotional spots as part of our season sponsorship for local theaters including Indianapolis Opera, Phoenix Theatre, and Ballet Internationale.

  • Scheduled Public Service Announcements for the Red Cross "September 11" fund.  Also continued to promote the Family Advocacy Center event, Fiesta 2001 and the Kidney Foundation fundraiser.

Education:

  • Karen Kennedy-Pierce, TWC Education Coordinator, met with the Educational Television Committee to evaluate new programming options for the new school year.  Pierce also attended a Marion County PTA Council meeting to discuss how we will integrate the NCTA's Critical Viewing  Skills Program in this school's year's plans.

  • The Indianapolis Division mailed advance notices of the "Common Good" to all of the Division's high school Social Studies teachers.  The Common Good is a Time Warner Cable Corporate initiative in conjunction with CSPAN that promotes the benefits of volunteering.

  • Met with IPS for a monthly update meeting on the "Tech-Know-Grant" project.  This should be the last meeting prior to launching the Road Runner High Speed Internet service to the IPS 6th graders in mid-October.  An additional 200 students have been enrolled in the three IPS Middle School 6th grade classes, so apparently 800 students will be anticipated in the program during the first year, rather that the 600 we had originally anticipated.  Self-install discs are being produced to mitigate the need for full installation of the modem by TWC staff.

  • Pierce produced an electronic Newsletter that is being forwarded to area teachers.  The newsletter highlights Cable in the Classroom initiatives.

Community Affairs:

  • Sponsored the Speaking of Women's Health Conference on September 28th.

  • Produced two employee Payday Newsletters.

  • Al Aldridge, TWC PR Manager, attended a sponsor reception for the Circle City Classic.  The Division provided over $50,000 in support for this year's Classic event, which showcases two African-American Colleges over a weekend to an audience of over 100,000.  Monies raised during this event fund scholarships for traditionally Black colleges.

  • Sponsored the 5th Annual Family Advocacy Center's "Kid's, Police, and Fire Chief Celebration" on September 22nd at Arsenal Technical High School.  We promoted the event and hosted a booth at the event.  The Learning Channel provided premium items for distribution to children who attended the event.

  • Supported the National Kidney Foundation of Indiana's "Mardi Grads" event at Union Station on September 22 as one of their media sponsors.  The Division provided over $5000 in support of the event, which is the premier fundraiser for the not-for-profit organization.

  • The Division launched the Annual United Way Campaign to employees on September 14.  The campaign will run through October 19.

  • Al Aldridge and Shary Johnston attended the Arts Council of Indianapolis's "Start with Art Luncheon" as the guests of the Eiteljorg Museum of American Indian and Western Art.  The luncheon is the kick-off event for the community's art season.  The Division supports over seven performing arts organizations within the community.  The Division also sponsored the national launch of the "Eiteljorg Fellowship for Native American Fine Art" in New York this past April.

  • Aldridge attended the monthly meeting of the Indianapolis Public Schools Education Foundation (IPSEF) Board meeting.

Road Runner:

  • Shary Johnston coordinated a meeting between RR personnel and the Controller as well as IT Manager of the Indianapolis Bus System, "Indy Go," to discuss the possibility of RR providing high speed Internet connections for the bus company to access census and traffic pattern data from files at the City-County Building.
