Public Affairs Monthly Report
February 2001
Education:
-
Participated in the Indianapolis Chamber of Commerce's Business-Education Partnership Summit at the Children's Museum. The goal of the summit is to help businesses and schools discover potential partnerships to help students succeed in the future. Our Road Runner capability was an item for discussion.
-
Met with members of the YMCA to discuss our involvement in promoting their "Invest In Youth Program." We agreed to produce a :30 spot with a Time Warner tag and will air it as a PSA during the month of March.
-
We obtained and secured the rights to air "Virus of Violence" on the Indianapolis Educational Access channels. The documentary explains how movies, TV, and video game developers influence our children using the same methods the military uses to train soldiers for war. This project was undertaken because of the strong commitment that Time Warner Cable has made to expand the NCTA's Critical Viewing Skill Workshop initiatives throughout the franchise.
-
Because we are only sending one "Cable in the Classroom" magazine to each of our division schools, we developed and produced a division "On-line Education Newsletter." The newsletter augments information presented in the "Cable in the Classroom" magazine as well as local education opportunities. The electronic newsletter is delivered to the Indianapolis Division's public schools technology center, where it is put on a classroom teacher list serve. This ensures that all of the division's teachers have access to cable education information.
-
Mailed out contest information on the Time Warner Cable C-Span initiative, "The Common Good" to all Indianapolis division high schools. The Common Good Contest explores the role of Public Service in America.
-
Set up an Indianapolis initiative with VH1's Save the Music, to support music education in the Indianapolis Public Schools. A press conference and student music performance is scheduled for March 27th at the State Capitol Rotunda.
-
Mailed out 1500 Time Warner Cable National Teacher Award entry forms to all schools throughout the division. Teacher Technology 2000, a local teacher competition entry forms were included with the school mailings.
Community Affairs:
-
The Division sponsored a fundraiser with Hemophilia of Indiana, "Hearts for Hemophilia." We sponsored a few tables and donated a raffle prize. The event, a Valentine's dinner/dance/silent auction, raised over $22,000 for Hemophilia. Al Aldridge, our Public Relations Manager is the President of the statewide non-profit organization.
-
The Division has partnered with the Indianapolis Public Schools, Crawfordsville schools and Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) for the implementation of a $1.9 million dollar education grant related to giving 6th grade students access to the Internet with a high speed connection. The Division was invited to a PC seminar at the IUPUI campus and presented a Road Runner product overview to 30 of the teachers involved in the project.
-
Al Aldridge has been asked to serve on the Board of Directors of the Indianapolis Public Schools Education Foundation. The foundation is the fundraising arm of the Indianapolis Public Schools. |
