Construction Report - September 2000
Public Affairs Monthly Report
September 2000
Programming and Production:
-
Produced and aired three promotional spots for the Circle City Classic.
-
Produced and aired a promotional spot for El Centro Hispano's "Day of the Dead" festival held in cooperation with the Indiana State Museum.
Education Initiatives:
-
Karen Kennedy Pierce, TWC Education Coordinator, attended a meeting with Indianapolis Public School officials to determine how we can develop better utilization of cable education products by teachers.
-
Provided a satellite downlink for the Indiana Educational Partners Council.
-
Hosted a PTA workshop in the Time Warner Cable studio in celebration of "Take Charge of Your TV" week. The workshop provided participants with critical TV viewing skill techniques that they can use at home to help limit the effects of commercialism on children. At the conclusion of the workshop, participants were invited to create their own commercial using their newly acquired skills. A second meeting has been scheduled to complete the commercial which will play back on the cable system throughout Marion County.
-
Karen also participated in the Great Lakes Cable Expo Cable Education Day workshop held at Navy Pier.
-
Shary Johnston met with key Indianapolis Public School representatives and instructors from a local university to develop initial plans for implementation of "Tech-Know-Build," an initiative to bridge the digital divide and funded through a $9million federal grant. Indiana University's Indianapolis Campus is developing technology courses for IPS middle school teachers that incorporates Cable in the Classroom programming and encourages students to utilize high-speed Internet access in the learning process. Time Warner Cable will place high-speed modems in sixth grade students' homes at a discounted price. Grant funds will help offset monthly rates. It is anticipated that we will place modems in approximately 1000 homes during the first year pilot program. During the following three years, additional sixth grade students will be brought into the program and the initial students will stay with the project through the seventh and eighth grades.
Community Activities:
-
Provided corporate sponsorship for the International Citizen of the Year Dinner at which Tony George, President of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, was honored.
-
Supported the Indianapolis Coalition of 100 Black Women's "Gourmet Gents" fund-raising event with advertising sponsorship.
-
Attended the Indianapolis Arts Council's "Start With Arts" luncheon in which local businesses are recognized for their support of local Arts organizations.
-
As a member of the Delegate Council of the Community Centers of Indianapolis, Al Aldridge also attended a special board meeting to evaluate leadership options for the organization which provides support to low and moderate income families throughout Indianapolis.
AOL-Time Warner Approvals
-
Indianapolis has completed all required AOL-Time Warner franchise approvals, even though we did not begin the process until June 6th. All but one of the approvals was completed in less than 90 days. The City of Carmel provided approval on September 18th, 105 days after receiving our notification request. Much confusion surrounded the AOL request due to the fact that during the same time frame, most municipalities were trying to approve regulatory ordinances and franchise applications for two hard wire competitors, Total Link and Digital Access.
