Public Affairs Monthly Report

September 1997

Programming:

  • Continued producing Six-Thirty Show to meet production requirements of the Indianapolis Franchise Agreement.  Guests included Ray Wallace, Indy Parks Director; Dr. Suellen Reed, State Superintendent of Public Instruction; Dan Wakefield, author of Going All the Way; and Garfield the Cat.

  • Signed an agreement with WAV-53 TV to take responsibility beginning October 17 for all local origination productions to meet Indianapolis Franchise requirements.  WAV will be taking two of our production staff members as WAV employees.

  • Produced and aired commercial spots promoting the Indianapolis Opera's production of The Magic Flute; The Edyvean Theatre's production of Mame; the American Cabaret Theatre's production of Cabaret; the Indiana Repertory Theatre's production of To Kill a Mockingbird; and the Leukemia Society's Diamond Ball fund-raising event.

Community:

  • Developed plans for an October 14 joint venture with Indiana's Attorney General and the USA Network to promote USA's "Week Without Violence."  The Attorney General's office will sponsor a workshop for students involved with Project Peace, an initiative to teach youngsters to manage conflict, and Time Warner Cable will develop 30-second spot announcements featuring the workshop participants.  The 30-second spots will be cablecast throughout the year on unsold ad avails throughout the cable system.

  • In conjunction with the Arts Council and the Bravo/Independent Film Channel, we sponsored a jazz concert by the Oliver Nelson, Jr. Quartet in the Indianapolis ArtsGarden.

  • Provided a Cable in the Classroom briefing to teachers at Indianapolis Public School #105.

  • Sponsored a booth at the "Fiesta '97" Hispanic Festival.

  • Hosted a financial planning seminar for hemophilia patients and their families who had received awards from a class action lawsuit against the nation's blood banks.
