Public Affairs Monthly Report

October 1996

  • Produced Special Live Six-Thirty PM show from the ArtsGarden featuring the Circle City Classic Gala.  Interviews with the Mayor of Indianapolis, the Lt. Governor's wife, representatives from each of the traditionally black colleges that were participating in the Circle City Classic, and other prominent business persons were conducted.

  • Produced and uplinked live coverage of the Circle City Classic Parade.  Eight other Time Warner Cable systems carried the parade.

  • Produced a special video for Martin University with actor Sonny Landham serving as producer.

  • Video taped the Chamber of Commerce's "Let's Talk Politics" workshop for the Indiana Cable Telecommunications Association.  The program will be made available to cable operators throughout the state.

  • In conjunction with the grand opening of the "It's Us" exhibit, we produced live coverage of the Naturalization Ceremony for US Citizens at the International Festival.  In addition, we produced a Six-Thirty show live from the Indiana State Fair Grounds where the International Festival was being held.  "Bugs Bunny" participated in both the naturalization ceremony and as a guest on the Six-Thirty show.  Also, a 30-minute show on "What it means to be an American" was produced for the LO Channel.

  • An hour-long interview with the Governor of the State was featured as the first anniversary show for Six-Thirty.

  • Produced:
-Video PSA and nine radio spots for Indiana Leukemia Society fundraising event,
-Video spot for the Edyvean Theatre's October Show, "Visit to a Small Planet,"
-Video spot for the Indianapolis Opera's "Die Fledermaus."

  • Launched "It's Us" essay contest in schools throughout the division.  Contest runs through November 11.

  • Displayed paper show of "It's Us" at the International Festival which ran for four days.  As a major sponsor of the festival, we were able to have a city-county councilor and state representative join Bugs Bunny for the festival's opening ceremony and ribbon cutting.  In addition, Bugs made several appearances at the festival and drew additional attention to the "It's Us" exhibit.  Over 5000 students from throughout the state attended the opening day activities.

  • The formal "It's Us" exhibit opened with day-long activities at the Indianapolis-Marion County Public Library on October 20th.  As one of the numerous activities scheduled in conjunction with the exhibit's display, Al Aldridge, PR Manager, facilitated a cultural diversity discussion with a senior citizen study group.

  • Provided major sponsorship for the Circle City Classic football game and related community events.

  • Launched the Division's annual United Way Campaign.

  • Co-Sponsored Jazz in the ArtsGarden with the Bravo Network.

  • Presented Cable in the Classroom/Critical Viewing Skills Workshop to the Lutheran School's parents and teachers.

  • Provided table sponsorship for the Better Business Bureau's Business Recognition Dinner.

  • Each year, American Cablevision's system is tested by an independent third party to insure that RF (radio frequency) signals are not leaking into the air.  The FCC requires this test to protect aircraft and air traffic control operations from having interference in their communications.  Signal leakage is frequently caused by unauthorized persons tampering with the cable system to receive programming without paying for it.  Over the past two years, with the help of Prosecutor Scott Newman, members of his staff and the Indianapolis Police Department, American Cablevision has been able to significantly mitigate cable theft in Indianapolis.  As a result, American Cablevision passes the FCC's "Cumulative Leakage Index" test with a 100% score this month.

  • Under Section 7.03 (e) of the new franchise, American Cablevision agreed to appoint a Local Community Interest Program Advisory Committee with three representatives from established non-profit community organizations.  In October, three prominent members of the non-profit community confirmed their membership on the committee.  They are: Ramona Baker, Executive Director of the Indianapolis Arts Council; Danita Edwards, Community Affairs Director for the Indianapolis Chamber of Commerce; and Irv Katz, President, United Way of Central Indiana.
