Public Affairs Monthly Report

May 1996

  • Provided live election return coverage of the May 7 Primary during an expanded version of the 6:30 PM local origination show.  Featured live call-in from gubernatorial candidates as well as 10th Congressional candidates.

  • Produced a "Special Direct Connection" program featuring bicycle safety as a prelude to major involvement in a cooperative venture with USA Networks, the Indianapolis Police Safety Office and the Major Taylor Velodrome to stress bicycle safety this summer.

  • Assisted the Indianapolis Chamber of Commerce with student tours of downtown Indianapolis for third graders from the Indianapolis Public School System.

  • Assisted IPS Coleman Middle School with the production of spots for the school's in-house television system.  This is part of an on-going project to mentor youngsters in the skills required to produce television programming: i.e., planning, organization, writing, editing, critical thinking, and videography.

  • Provided NCTA "Critical Viewing Skills" workshop to attendees at the Indiana Parent Teachers Association Annual Convention.

  • Presented "It's Us" exhibit and discussed potential partnership opportunities with members of the International Center.  Held follow-up meetings with the International Festival which will be held in Indianapolis in October, when the exhibit launch is scheduled in this community.

  • Sent letters to Central Indiana area school superintendents, principals, and media specialists inviting them to join us for the "educators" workshops at the Great Lakes Expo in August.  To date we have received 24 responses from educators in our franchise area wanting to attend the event where we will provide information about our Cable in the Classroom and KNOW TV programs.

  • Provided "Cable in the Classroom" and "Critical Viewing Skills" presentations to students at IPS School #60.

  • Introduced the media instructor at IPS Coleman Middle School to the Cable in the Classroom Program.

  • Committed to major "media sponsorships" for the 1996-97 seasons of both the Indianapolis Opera and the Edyvean Theatre.

  • Secured rights to produce and distribute this year's Circle City Classic Parade.
