Community Involvement Report
January 1994

Provided major corporate sponsorship for the "Songs of My People" photo exhibit at the Children's Museum of Indianapolis. The exhibit, which features photos by African-American photographers, has received national tour sponsorship by Time-Warner Inc., American Cablevision's parent company. In addition to hosting local dignitaries during the opening night reception, American's local origination channel - WTWE, Cable Channel 20, featured live programming from the exhibit during the first week of its display.

Hosted the Indianapolis Chamber of Commerce's "Center Township" membership meeting where issues of concern to Center Township businesses were discussed. Following the meeting, John Myrland, Chamber President, and City-County Councilman Frank Short appeared on the "Coffee Club" show on WTWE-Cable Channel 20 to discuss the issues and proposed solutions that were raised during the meeting.

Hosted an on-site visit of the Central Indiana Regional Blood Center's Bloodmobile during a time-period in which the Central Indiana area was experiencing a critical shortage of blood for use in local hospitals. American Cablevision has regularly scheduled between four and six bloodmobile visits each year since 1982.

Distributed a copy of "Voices of Triumph" and "Songs of My People" to each Indianapolis Public Schools High School and Middle School during a formal ceremony with Indianapolis Public School Superintendent Shirl Gilbert. The books will be placed in the schools' media centers and students will be encouraged to read the books then develop 60-second video announcements highlighting a specific aspect in the books. These video spots will be played back on American Cablevision's local origination Channel-WTWE.

Provided sponsorship to the Indiana Mental Health Association's "Intro '94" legislative dinner.

Provided support to the Indianapolis Press Club for it's annual Gridiron Dinner.

Began production of a live hour-long call-in show, "Direct Connection," five days a week, to provide viewers with an opportunity to discuss local and national issues as follows: Mon. Sheila Kennedy, Exec. Dir. of the Indiana Civil Liberties Union Tues. Neil Pickett, Program Management Director for the Hudson Institute Wed. Eric Miller, Director of Citizens Concerned for the Constitution Thurs. Amos Brown, local radio personality on WTLC Fri. Michael Gradison, community advocate
In addition to this daily program, WTWE produced live coverage of the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., celebration from Martin University and two University of Indianapolis basketball games. All of these programs were in addition to the regularly scheduled 17 hours of production done on a weekly basis.
