Mayor Peterson to celebrate public housing renovations
Indianapolis Housing Agency Completes Major Renovation of Laurelwood Apartments
Indianapolis – Mayor Bart Peterson today is joining Indianapolis Housing Agency (IHA) Executive Director Rufus “Bud” Myers, community leaders, and public housing residents in celebrating the completion of construction at Laurelwood Apartments, a multi-phased renovation of 135 rental units on the city’s south side, 3340 Teakwood Drive.
“Today’s event recognizes a substantial accomplishment toward IHA’s on-going mission to provide safe, quality, and affordable housing opportunities while strengthening families and individuals for economic self-sufficiency,” said Mayor Peterson.
Over $2.8 million in financing was made available for the Laurelwood Apartments’ renovation by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. Originally built in 1968, the 38 year-old apartment community was in need of extensive upgrades.
The renovation focused on contemporary features and updates more common to market rate rental housing, such as the installation of covered front porches, the addition of a lighted walking/biking path, and more green space. Other aspects include increased energy efficiency with new roofs, windows, and doors and increased safety through new site lighting.
Laurelwood Apartments is one of eleven IHA rental communities, providing housing for over 1,700 of the city’s lowest income households. Residents pay 30% of their income toward rent, with a minimum rent of $50.
“Today’s event is a celebration,” Mr. Myers said. “Because I believe that every Marion County citizen is entitled to housing and the opportunity to meet the very basic needs of their family, I am proud to be a part of an on organization that works diligently to meet these needs.”
