Mayor to announce three new charter schools
INDIANAPOLIS - Mayor Bart Peterson will grant charters to three new charter schools, including two high schools, in Indianapolis.
WHEN: Friday, August 19, 2005 1:30 p.m.
WHERE: Fairbanks Hospital 8102 Clearvista Parkway
Herron High School will be a college-preparatory liberal arts high school focused on a classical curriculum. The school is being developed by members of the downtown cultural community and will be located on the near-north side of downtown. It will open in August 2006
Recovery High School, developed by Fairbanks Hospital, Inc., is designed for students who are recovering from alcoholism or drug addiction. It will open in August 2006.
The Challenge Foundation Academy plans to locate in the Meadows neighborhood and offer a back-to-basics curriculum. It will serve kindergarten through 5th grade in its first year. The school will serve kindergarten through 8th grade by year four. It will open in August 2006.
Charter schools are public schools that are freed from most of the regulations governing traditional schools. They control their own curriculum, staffing, organization and budget. In exchange for this freedom, they must meet the highest academic standards. The addition of the three new charter schools will bring the total of mayor-sponsored charter schools to 18.
