City to host fourth annual Canal FamilyFest

Mayor invites families to enjoy July 4th holiday at Canal and White River State Park

Indianapolis – The City of Indianapolis and the Canal and White River State Park, in partnership with the Central Indiana Community Foundation; Annie E. Casey Foundation; and the Clear Channel stations of Q95, X103 and WNDE; will host the fourth annual "Canal FamilyFest," a July 4th festival held along the Downtown Canal Walk. The event is free and open to the public.

When: Monday, July 4, 4:30 – 8:30 p.m.

NOTE: 5:20 p.m. – Mayor Bart Peterson will introduce the opening band at the Ohio St. Basin stage.

Where: Downtown Canal Walk, from the Vermont St. Plaza to the Indiana State Museum

"The Canal FamilyFest has become a great annual tradition for Indianapolis residents and visitors celebrating this important, patriotic day in our nation's history." said Mayor Peterson. "This event, like in previous years, will offer a variety of fun activities families can enjoy leading up to the Downtown Regions Bank 'Freedom Blast' Fireworks."

The Canal FamilyFest will feature musical performances by Polka Boy, Ann McWilliams and Cool Chilies, as well as clowns, face painting, interactive arts exhibits and other free-of-charge family activities. Food and beverages also will be available.

Pedalboat rentals will start at $15 for 30-minute rides, $5 off the regular price, and Gondola rides for individuals or families can be purchased during the event.

Limited free parking will be available at the northwest corner of Senate and St. Clair Streets. Parking also will be available starting at 3 p.m. at the Indiana Government Center garage on Senate Ave. and the garage on Washington St. across from Victory Field beginning at 2 p.m. Both garages will charge a $3 flat rate and will be open until midnight.

The event will be accessible to persons with disabilities, with access to the Canal Walk through the Indiana Historical Society, or through elevators at the intersection of Indiana Avenue and Michigan Street and on the north side of New York Street.

In conjunction with the FamilyFest, the Canal and White River State Park will play host to a variety of events and activities on July 4th. The Indiana State Museum, the Eiteljorg and the Indiana Historical Society will all offer special events in celebration of Independence Day. Visit www.discovercanal.com for more information.
