Changes in Mayor’s press office

INDIANAPOLIS - Mayor Bart Peterson today announced changes in his press office, effective immediately:

· Jo Lynn Garing, who has served as press secretary since 2000, will be moving to the Department of Waterworks to become director of communications.  She will be working on various issues the department will be facing over the next two years.  She can be reached at 263-6398.

During her tenure in the Mayor’s Office, Garing coordinated media relations efforts and developed communication strategies.  She was a founding member of the Friends of Indianapolis Animal Care and Control Foundation and worked on many special projects, such as Indianapolis Works and FitCity.  Prior to joining city government, Garing served as a public information officer for the Office of Utility Consumer Counselor and as media relations team leader for the Indiana Department of Environmental Management.  She is a graduate of Indiana University.

· Monica Whitfield Brase, who has been in the Mayor’s office since 2004, will be moving to the city’s Office of Neighborhood Services to be neighborhood outreach coordinator, where she will work on proactive neighborhood outreach, including City Halls for a Day.

Before joining the city, Brase was a staffer on Peterson’s 2003 reelection campaign.  She previously was director of public relations at the Indiana State Bar Association and a local coordinator for Gov. Frank O’Bannon’s 2000 reelection campaign.  She holds a bachelor’s degree in communications from the University of Evansville.

· Justin Ohlemiller, who has served in several capacities in the administration in the past few years, most recently as the public information officer for Department of Metropolitan Development (DMD), will be returning to the Mayor's office as press secretary.  A graduate of Butler University, he previously worked as press assistant to the Mayor, assistant public information officer for DMD and as a campaign director on Peterson’s 2003 reelection bid.

Ohlemiller will join Deputy Mayor Steve Campbell in fielding media and public inquiries on city government.  Ohlemiller can be reached at 327-3690
