Amy Minick Peterson to speak at Latino rally against domestic violence
INDIANAPOLIS - First Lady Amy Minick Peterson will join the Latino Coalition Against Domestic and Sexual Violence and the National Latino Alliance for the Elimination of Domestic Violence at a rally to increase awareness and seek support against domestic and sexual violence in the Latino community.
WHEN: Wednesday, October 19 11 a.m.
WHERE: Monument Circle North Steps
"Domestic violence destroys family life," Peterson said. "Many times women and their families suffer domestic abuse in silence. We want women to know how to seek the support and help they need when they feel trapped in an abusive situation. Today we’re also highlighting the need for more bilingual services in our community."
The Latino Coalition promotes awareness and works towards the elimination of domestic and sexual violence and the conditions that affect the Latino community. The rally is sponsored by the Indiana Coalition Against Sexual Assault, Indiana Coalition Against Domestic Violence, Marion County Minority Health Coalition, the Domestic Violence Network of Greater Indianapolis, the Julian Center and the Mayor’s Commission on Latino Affairs.
In 2000, Mayor Bart Peterson created the Mayor’s Commission on Latino Affairs to be an advocate for the Latino community. Since then, the commission has worked on many initiatives, including:
- Hired the first IPD Latino coordinator;
- Established the first Spanish line to report crime and drug activity;
- Established the first Latino crime prevention program; and
- Organized training for IPD officers on Latino gangs.
