Mayor's Night Out for Youth 2009

On October 29, Mayor Greg Ballard and the Mayor’s Youth Council hosted the city’s first Mayor’s Night Out for Youth event at Thatcher Park Family Center. Over 150 youth attended the inaugural event where they were given an opportunity to ask questions of the Mayor and his executive staff. Youth asked questions about city government, activities and programs geared toward youth, education, the responsibilities and challenges of being the Mayor and much more.

Mayor’s Night Out
Every month Mayor Greg Ballard conducts a Mayor’s Night Out in each township within Indianapolis/Marion County. During the Mayor’s Night Out, Mayor Ballard and his Executive Staff meet with residents to engage in a productive question & answer session.

The question & answer session is preceded by a bus tour of the township with community leaders.

During the bus tour the Mayor’s executive staff travel with a half dozen community leaders to discuss the strengths, weaknesses, positives and negatives of the township and how city interaction can help further develop the community.

Mayor’s Night Out events are an informative, efficient and productive way for the citizens to engage in city government. If you are interested in attending your township’s Mayor’s Night Out, visit http://www.indy.gov/Neighborhoods for more information or to contact the Mayor’s Neighborhood Liaison for your area.

About the Mayor’s Youth Council

The Mayor’s Youth Council (MYC) is comprised of a group of students from across Marion County who serve as the voice of Indianapolis youth in city government.

MYC members are selected based on proven leadership skills, school activities and community involvement. MYC members are nominated by a school principal, guidance counselor, school superintendent, teacher, faith leader or the head of a community organization.

In October, the 2009 Mayor’s Youth Council met with the Mayor for a kick-off event and orientation. During the orientation, the youth identified their goals for the year. Beyond planning youth-oriented events like the Mayor’s Night Out for Youth, the council plans to organize and take part in a variety of community service projects.

During the holiday season, the council plans to put together gift bags with toiletries and necessities for the homeless. They also plan to commit time each month to serve meals to the homeless and those in need. Additionally, this spring, the council will participate in the Great Indy Cleanup sponsored by the City of Indianapolis and Keep Indianapolis Beautiful Inc.
