The City of Indianapolis currently has 20 park rangers who are responsible for ensuring the Indy Parks' properties are safe for people to visit, and that park amenities and facilities are safeguarded. To this end, these rangers actively patrol the 207 park properties, 65 miles of trails and greenways, 13 golf courses and Eagle Creek Reservoir, in addition to other waterways in Marion County under the jurisdiction of Indy Parks. They enforce local and state laws as well as park policies and procedures. Additionally, they are responsible for security event planning and traffic needs at all events which occur on park properties.
PARK CRIMEWATCHThe Park CrimeWatch program was created in an effort to further facilitate the Indy Parks mission of including "safe, clean and well-maintained park facilities for the community's use and enjoyment." The program is an extension of the existing CrimeWatch program, which relies on community involvement to report suspicious activities and crime. Using existing resources, Park CrimeWatch teaches people how to properly spot and report criminal activity in their neighborhood parks.
Park Ranger Lt. Jay Thomas administers and supervises the Park CrimeWatch program. He is available to speak about the program to any community group interested in monitoring a park. For further information call the Ranger Station at 327-7140.
